You know longer have to choose between have a nice lawn and having a dog. This article will teach you how to do both. The 3 main problems caused by pets include urination (over fertilization), pH imbalances, and compaction. This article will teach you how to deal with and overcome these problems.

To begin with, lawn compaction is not a problem that can always be over come. A lot depends on the size and energy level of your dog and how large or small the lawn is. Something that will help most of the time is to aerate your lawn on a regular basis. This will reduce root compaction stress caused by large pets and improve the condition of the soil. Aeration can be chemical, mechanical or both.

Pet urination (over fertilization) is a common problem with dogs. It is what causes yellow spots in your lawn. Usually the grass nearest the front and back doors are the areas with the most evident problems. Dog urine burns the lawn because it has urea in it. Urea is a powerful nitrogen fertilizer. Its N-P-K value is 46-0-0 with means it is super high in nitrogen. Urea is a wonderful fertilizer. However, to much of it can burn the lawn. There are several ways to solve this problem. Some include: giving your pet an additive (vitamin) in their diet to neutralize the effects of the urine, pouring water over the areas where your dog peas, and training your dog to urinate on other areas off of the lawn. The last option seems to be the preferred method but every pet is a little different so use the one that works best for you.

The third pet problem is ovulation. This is only problematic with female dogs. It is even more acidic than urine & will damage your lawn even faster. There is also an additive you can give your pet to fix this problem or you can have your pet fixed. You should try to fix patches causes by ovulation on a regular basis to keep the damage from getting out of hand.

Once your lawn has been damaged by either urea or pH imbalances, the next step is to repair the spots in the lawn that are damaged. To do this, first scrape off affected area down to the soil. Next, replace with either sod or seed. For seed lawn use a light topdressing and starter fertilizer. Be sure to water regular. Grass should take 3-6 weeks to get established.
